Rosacea impacts over 16 million individuals in the U.S. alone. If you’re struggling with the condition and its effect on your confidence, tips from Nurse Erin and the MAIA Aesthetics Team can help you get back to feeling your best.
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that is more common in women than in men, with those having fair skin being particularly susceptible, although it can affect all skin types. Nurse Erin explains, “Several factors can contribute to the development of rosacea, including genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, environmental stressors, diet, skincare routines, and emotional stress.” While rosacea usually starts showing up in mid-life, it can occur at any age.
Erin adds, “It’s not uncommon for people who had clear skin when they were younger to notice the onset of breakouts and skin irritation as they get older—this is one of the classic signs of rosacea.” Other symptoms may include frequent flushing of the skin, irritation, inflamed bumps often confused with acne, red and sore eyes, as well as persistent redness. As the condition progresses, broken blood vessels may appear, further worsening the appearance of the skin.
Treatment Options – Light Therapy: Lumecca IPL
Rosacea comes in several different forms, with the most common being the vascular type, which causes redness and broken blood vessels, and the inflammatory type, which leads to breakouts. These types often overlap, and rosacea can range from mild to severe in severity. Inflammatory rosacea, which includes bumps, pimples, and spots, generally responds well to topical treatments. However, vascular rosacea, which leads to persistent redness and visible capillaries, typically requires more advanced treatments like laser therapy or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).
IPL is an effective treatment option for vascular rosacea as it provides long-lasting relief by reducing facial redness and improving the appearance of broken blood vessels. It’s important, however, to ensure that any active breakouts are treated and cleared up before starting IPL or laser treatments. If breakouts are left untreated, the inflamed lesions can absorb some of the light energy, which reduces the treatment’s effectiveness on the blood vessels and may worsen the breakouts. This is a mistake often made in many other beauty salons and aesthetic clinics, where the focus may not always be on clearing the skin first. IPL works by using specific wavelengths of light to target the pigment in blood vessels, helping to diminish their visibility and reduce redness over time, but it’s most effective when the skin is prepped properly.
Anti-Inflammatory Skincare
In managing inflammatory rosacea, using the right skincare products can significantly help soothe and protect the skin. The Sente Dermal Repair Cream is a standout choice, featuring Heparan Sulfate Analog, a patented repairing molecule that boosts the skin’s immune response to inflammation and promotes healing from within. This helps calm irritated skin and supports long-term recovery. The cream also contains Vitamin E, a moisture-replenishing antioxidant that helps protect the skin from environmental stressors, and Green Tea Extract, which is known for its soothing properties and its ability to neutralize free radicals that contribute to inflammation and damage. “The combination of these powerful ingredients makes Sente Dermal Repair Cream perfect for those with rosacea,” says Nurse Erin. “It helps reduce flare-ups while promoting repair and hydration, ensuring the skin is not only soothed but also protected for the long term.” These ingredients work together to restore the skin’s balance, providing both immediate relief and lasting benefits.
Another great option for those managing inflammatory rosacea is the ISClinical ProHeal Serum Advanced+, an excellent choice for soothing and protecting the skin. This advanced serum offers potent antioxidant protection with a powerful blend of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Ferulic Acid, which work together to calm irritated skin and neutralize free radicals that contribute to inflammation. Not only does it help reduce redness, but it also improves the appearance of blemish-prone skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. “The combination of soothing and revitalizing ingredients makes the ISClinical ProHeal Serum Advanced+ ideal for rosacea sufferers,” says Nurse Erin. “It helps strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, soothes irritation, and revitalizes aging or sensitive skin, all while offering significant antioxidant protection.” This serum provides immediate relief while also improving the overall appearance of the skin over time.
