Vitamin C has long been recognized for its powerful antioxidant properties, ability to enhance collagen production, and effectiveness in reducing pigmentation. It’s become a staple in any comprehensive skincare routine, particularly during the seasons where UV exposure tends to be higher. Here, our own Nurse Erin breaks down all the essential information about this beloved and reliable skincare hero.
What does Vitamin C do?
It might be easier to list what vitamin C *doesn’t* do. As one of the most effective antioxidants, it shields the skin from environmental damage, such as UV rays, blue light, and pollution, while also brightening the complexion, boosting collagen production, and reducing pigmentation. Nurse Erin shares, “I place vitamin C at the top of all skincare ingredients. It’s most beneficial when applied topically, as trying to ingest enough to match its antioxidant effects would be toxic. Plus, it helps stimulate collagen because fibroblasts, which produce collagen, have receptors for vitamin C, making the cells’ DNA more active in creating collagen.”
Vitamin C is also known for its skin-brightening effects. According to Nurse Erin, “While any resurfacing effect is quite mild, it’s not the primary benefit. However, it does prevent abnormal pigmentation production, which results in a visibly brighter complexion.”
What type of Vitamin C is best?
Like other powerful ingredients (such as retinol), things can get complicated with vitamin C due to the various types used by different brands. Ascorbic acid, or L-ascorbic acid, is the purest, most researched form of vitamin C, though it’s also the most unstable. Nurse Erin explains, “The type of vitamin C used often depends on the overall formulation of the product and its delivery system.”
The Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ combines scientifically advanced L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) with a superior form of Olive Leaf Extract and pure Vitamins E and A. This powerful formulation is designed to provide potent antioxidant protection while improving the appearance of compromised, blemish-prone, and aging skin. Nurse Erin shares, “This serum is a standout for anyone with sensitive or blemish-prone skin. The combination of ingredients helps soothe, calm, and revitalize the skin without irritation.” It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving skin looking brighter and more youthful. “It’s a great option for those who want to improve the overall health of their skin, especially if you’re dealing with skin sensitivity or aging concerns”, Nurse Erin adds.
What to look for
When it comes to Vitamin C skincare, packaging plays a crucial role in maintaining the product’s effectiveness. To keep the active ingredient potent, look for sealed, airless pumps, darker tinted bottles, or sealed ampoules, which help protect the formula from degradation—especially when it contains pure ascorbic acid, which is highly unstable.
Nurse Erin advises, “It’s important to also consider how you store and use the product. Always keep the lid tightly closed and avoid leaving it on a bathroom shelf, where fluctuating temperatures from showers or baths can break it down.” If you notice a slight change in color due to oxidation, it’s usually still fine to use, as it indicates the product has a good concentration. However, if the change is more noticeable, it’s best to discard the serum.
Know your %
Vitamin C is effective even at concentrations as low as 0.6%, but the higher the percentage, the more noticeable the effects. However, increasing the concentration can also raise the potential for skin sensitivity, so it’s best to start with a lower percentage and gradually work your way up. Nurse Erin advises, “Irritation is really the only downside to higher concentrations, so it’s important to ease into it.” For daily use, to brighten the skin tone and support your daily SPF, a concentration of up to 5% is typically sufficient.
Nurse Erin adds, “Even at 2%, some people might experience a tingling sensation. If that’s the case, try using it with a face cream to buffer the effects.” Once you reach 10% or higher, the product becomes more potent, so you should only be using it two or three times a week until you can gradually work your way up. “Consistency is key”, says Erin. “Using it regularly for at least eight weeks will give you the best results.” To target sun spots specifically, you’ll need to work your way up to around 20%, the concentration proven to be most effective.
How to use Vitamin C Skincare
Vitamin C is often recommended for morning use, particularly to protect the skin from pollution, but with this versatile ingredient, there are no strict rules—you can definitely use it at night as well. Nurse Erin advises, “The key is to make sure it becomes part of your consistent, ongoing routine.” Recent research shows that ascorbic acid stays in the skin for at least 72 hours, so using it two to three times a week will still yield results. However, if your skin can tolerate it, you could apply it both morning and night.
The easiest way to incorporate vitamin C is likely through a serum. Nurse Erin shares, “For me, a serum is the best way to deliver it to the skin. It’s often combined with vitamin E, which further enhances the antioxidant benefits of vitamin C.” And, of course, don’t forget your SPF. “Why use a high-concentration vitamin C and skip SPF?” asks Erin. “You’re treating pigmentation, but without SPF, you’re only exposing your skin to more damage.”
