Breast Implant Illness Treatment
Breast implants have been safely used to enhance the figures of millions of patients for decades. However, there are some women who have complained of adverse side effects after receiving breast implant augmentation. These side effects or symptoms vary greatly, but the combined group has been termed breast implant illness. Dr. Maia and our team at Maia Plastic Surgery offer breast implant illness treatment at our clinic in Tysons Corner, VA.
What Are the Symptoms of Breast Implant Illness?
Breast implant illness, or BII, is not a diagnosable illness, meaning there is not a test that can determine if a patient has this condition. Instead, a combination of symptoms is used to determine if a patient may be experiencing this health condition. Some of the common symptoms reported by a small percentage of women with breast implants include:
- Unusual fatigue
- Change in breast shape and color
- Rashes or redness on the skin
- Fever and chills
- Headaches
- Pain – chronic, chest and muscular
- Swelling
- Hormonal and neurological changes
- Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
The symptoms of BII may be different for each patient. When no other cause of the symptoms can be determined, a patient may be diagnosed with a breast implant illness based solely on the symptoms, since no test is available.
Breast implant illness treatment is usually the removal of the breast implants. In most cases, the patient will have relief from their symptoms once the implants are removed if there is no other cause for their symptoms. It can take several months for all symptoms to dissipate.
