Capsular Contracture After Breast Implants Treatment
Whenever surgery is performed, it is normal for scar tissue to form as part of the healing process. When breast augmentation surgery with breast implants is completed, a scar tissue capsule forms around the implants. While this is normal, in some cases, the scar tissue can become thick and restricting, a condition called capsular contracture. Our medical team at Maia Plastic Surgery offers capsular contracture after breast implant treatment at our clinic in Tysons Corner, VA.
The formation of scar tissue in a “capsule” around breast implants is a normal occurrence. Any foreign object that is implanted into the body is surrounded by scar tissue to protect the body. However, everybody is slightly different in how they heal. In some women, the scar tissue in the capsule becomes thicker and hardened, restricting the implant. This is called capsular contracture and can occur at various levels. When it is severe, it can cause aesthetic issues with the breast, and some patients may experience breast pain. Treatments are available to soften scar tissue. In severe cases, the breast implants may need to be removed or repositioned.
Symptoms of Capsular Contracture
A low grade form of capsular contracture can occur without any symptoms or signs of problems. At higher grades of capsular contracture, there are symptoms that can alert the patient to a possible issue. Symptoms can include:
- Breasts are firmer
- Breasts may appear rounder and harder
- The nipples can become misshapen
- In severe grades, the breasts can be painful and sensitive
When the breasts become painful, hard or misshapen, treatment may be needed. There are both non-invasive treatments and surgical options available, depending on the severity of the condition.
