When performed by a plastic surgeon or experienced cosmetic injector, the results can be stunning. However, not all facial or lip filler injections turn out as desired. What Are Hyaluronidase Injections?

Many facial fillers use hyaluronic acid to add volume under the skin. Juvederm®, Belotero® and Restylane® are some of the most popular brands of hyaluronic acid that can be injected into lips, cheeks, tear troughs and other areas to plump the area. When the results of hyaluronic acid injections are not acceptable or cause complications, they can be reversed with hyaluronidase injections.

Hyaluronidase injections contain the enzyme hyaluronidase, a natural-occurring enzyme that is found in the liver, kidneys, blood and other areas in the body. This enzyme dissolves hyaluronic acid crosslinks, allowing the filler to be broken up and eliminated quicker.

Filler Dissolving Treatment

If you have a lumpy appearance to your skin after facial filler treatment or the results do not look natural, you can have many filler injections reversed. Hyaluronidase injections can dissolve hyaluronic acid treatments and begin working in less than an hour. Instead of waiting for several months or more for fillers to dissolve on their own, hyaluronidase injections partially dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers immediately. There may be some swelling from the injections for a few days, but most of the filler should be gone within a week.

Not all filler injections are reversible. Only hyaluronic acid filler can be removed with hyaluronidase injections. Other filler injections like Radiesse® or Sculptra® are not reversible and cannot be dissolved with this treatment.
